Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis posted on Instagram that his March 1st fight with Lamont Roach has been canceled. Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) didn’t explain why his fight was canceled.
Tank’s message: “The fight is f**** cancel.”
Fans on social media have greeted the cancellation with happiness. They don’t want to see this albatross, especially since it’s on PPV. They see it as a mismatch, with the light-hitting, super featherweight Roach (25-1, 10 KOs) standing no chance.
This problematic fight had already been rescheduled once from the original date of December 14th, and fans have criticized it from day one. The fight got moved off that date due to a venue issue. It was hoped that it would be canceled, but instead, Premier Boxing Champions rescheduled it for March 1st at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Lamont Roach posted a workout video clip on Instagram just minutes after Tank Davis’ cancellation post, which suggests that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. This could mean that Tank acted alone without telling anyone that his fight with Roach was off.
So, there’s a chance the fight is still on because PBC has not said anything about it being canceled, and they would have already done so by now if it had.
Given the huge backlash that this fight has received, Tank probably wishes it would be canceled because the criticism the fight has generated is far worse than any of his past mismatches.
The reason for that is that fans expect more of Davis now, given that this is his 11th year as a pro. He’s 30, and it’s a big step backward for him from his fight against Ryan Garcia in 2023. Fans want to see Tank fighting the best, and Roach doesn’t come close to that.
He’s a super featherweight with no power, and he barely beat one of Tank’s knockout victims, Hector Garcia, by a 12-round split decision in November 2023 to win his WBA 130-lb title.
